Scientist/Sr. Scientist – Biomarker, Translational Medicine

Position summary:

OncoMed is seeking an experienced, creative, immuno-oncology biomarker Scientist looking to join our team focused on clinical and translational biomarker development. The successful candidate will play an essential role in OncoMed’s Translational Medicine Group leveraging flow cytometry and other biomarker platforms to develop pharmacodynamic and predictive biomarkers in support of OncoMed’s immuno-oncology pipeline. The candidate will closely collaborate with the Clinical Development and Research teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to scientific leadership of all immuno-oncology programs as subject matter expert in flow cytometry and its application to biomarker development and analyses in preclinical and clinical studies
  • Lead flow cytometry function within OncoMed, including direct hands-on biomarker assay development, validation and analysis to support clinical programs
  • Identify and develop biomarker assays to assess pharmacodynamics in clinical trial patient samples (e.g. ex vivo cell-based assays, receptor occupancy assays, plasma cytokine levels)
  • Contribute to developing strategies and assays around the use of Predictive Medicine technologies for oncology and immuno-oncology drug development
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. with at least 2 years pharmaceutical industry experience in immuno-oncology, oncology or immunology
  • Expertise in multicolor flow cytometry analysis, assay development and validation are required, with extensive hands-on experience in analyzing samples from preclinical animal models and clinical trial samples
  • Experience with ex vivo immune cell-based assays is strongly preferred
  • Experience with qPCR, Luminex and ELISA assay platforms is preferred
  • Experience managing clinical trial projects with CROs is preferred
  • Experience with the discovery and development of predictive biomarkers and pharmacodynamic biomarkers is preferred
  • Excellent skills in written and oral communication are required
  • Must work well and thrive in a matrix environment, collaborating with research and clinical teams

Scientist/Sr. Scientist – Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Biomarker, Translational Medicine

Position summary:

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated Biomarker Scientist/Senior Scientist that enjoys working in a fast paced work environment. The successful candidate will play an essential role in OncoMed’s Translational Medicine Department, directing scientific strategy around precision medicine, developing and implementing immunohistochemistry (IHC) single and multi-plex based predictive biomarkers in support of OncoMed’s clinical pipeline. The candidate will interact with both preclinical and clinical teams, contribute to INDs, will assist with developing the biomarker portion of clinical protocols, and drive clinical translational research biomarker strategy. The candidate will report to the Director, Translational Medicine.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic input into the identification and validation of novel IHC biomarker targets and assay development, collaborating closely within and across departments generating and screening novel IHC applicable antibodies
  • Hands-on IHC single and multi-plex assay development and staining, both manual and automated, on pre-clinical, non-clinical and clinical samples, working closely with other team members to determine appropriate assays to be used and guide experimental design focused on biomarker readouts
  • Transfer of developed IHC biomarker assays to a CLIA lab or to a diagnostic partner, with a focus on companion diagnostics
  • Imaging and analysis of tissue sections using automated microscopy, and manual and automated image analysis (Aperio, PE Vectra, and Definiens)
Requirements:
  • PhD or related degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline with at least 5 years pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Experience in histology, including tissue sample preparation, sectioning, special stains and particularly immunohistochemistry is required
  • Experience in the application of biomarkers towards oncology and immuno-oncology drug development is preferred
  • Familiarity with tumor pathology, cancer biology and image analysis is preferred
  • Excellent skills in written and oral communication are required
  • Works well and thrives in a collaborative matrix environment

Scientist, Research Protein Engineering

Position summary:

OncoMed Pharmaceuticals is developing novel biologic therapies for the treatment of cancer and currently has six clinical stage product candidates. OncoMed seeks an outstanding scientist with experience in protein purification and characterization who is looking to make a substantial impact on the development of novel protein therapeutics.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Generation of cell lines expressing novel proteins for use in Research using CHO cells
  • Purification of monoclonal antibodies, bispecific antibodies and Fc-fusion proteins for use in research
  • Functional characterization of novel biologics
Skills and Qualifications:
  • BS in a scientific/engineering field and 8+ years of experience, MS with 6+ years or PhD with 4+ years experience
  • Experience with cell culture including CHO
  • Experienced in protein purification techniques including column chromatography, standard membrane filtration and Ultrafiltration/Diafiltration
  • Familiarity with Wave bag technology
  • Working knowledge of AKTA systems
  • Additional protein characterization techniques a plus
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex process data
  • Communicates well, both orally and in writing

Scientist/Sr. Scientist, Immunotherapy

Position summary:

OncoMed Pharmaceuticals is developing novel biologics targeting the immune system for the treatment of cancer and currently has several clinical stage product candidates. We are inviting an outstanding scientist to join the Immuno-Oncology group to participate in developing new IO biologics. Research areas of interest include immune checkpoint inhibitors and immune activators in TNF superfamily members. The successful candidate should be highly motivated and desire to make significant contributions to move novel IO agents towards the clinic. This position reports to the Sr. Director.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide scientific leadership in immunology and implement in vivo preclinical studies to evaluate efficacy and understand mechanism of action of therapeutics
  • Actively participate in internal and external scientific meetings by presenting and critically evaluating the science and contribute to projects
  • Generate and evaluate new scientific ideas in the Immuno-Oncology field
Requirements:
  • Ph. D. with minimum of 3 years post-doctoral training in Immunology, preferably in myeloid cell biology
  • Expertise in hands-on in vivo skills: tumor implantation, dosing, blood and tissue collections
  • Expertise in ex vivo assays assessing various immune populations, including T cells, MDSCs, and DCs
  • Expertise in multi-color (>5 color) flow cytometry
  • Excellent publication record
  • Good interpersonal / communication skills, and the ability to work in a highly collaborative manner
  • Willing to learn new techniques

Long-term Intern, Process Development

Position summary:

The Department of Process Development at OncoMed Pharmaceuticals is seeking a motivated and outstanding Long-term Intern (6 – 12 month appointment) to join our efforts in developing processes for the manufacture of high purity antibodies and Fc fusion proteins. The candidate will mainly work in cell line/cell culture development with overlap into purification development. Preferred candidates will have previous experience executing experiments in academic or industry research laboratory, and ideally have experience with protein expression in mammalian cell culture.

Key Responsibilities and Qualifications:
  • B.S graduate or Ph.D. student in Molecular Biology or Biochemistry
  • Transfection into mammalian cells
  • Cell culture
  • Measurement of protein concentrations from cell culture fluid
  • Experience with protein purification by chromatography
